Connacht Lucky Against Borders

A few weeks ago, a Munster penalty kick in injury time, robbed Connacht of their first win against Munster in 22 games, tonight Connacht were the team who got out of jail with an Eric Elwood kick at the death, preventing The Borders from recording their first win away from home in the Celtic League.

The Borders who going into the match were bottom of the league, led 22-3 after half an hour but then Connacht began their fight-back. Five minutes before half-time scrum-half Conor O’Loughlin netted their first try, with Elwood converting for a 22-10 half-time deficit.

Connacht continued the fight back in the second half with Elwood slotting over a penalty straight after half-time, but the Borders didn’t give up and in the 50th minute picked up their 4th try of the night and claimed a bonus point.

Then a Paul Warwick pop pass put Connacht winger Niall O’Brien over seven minutes later and whilst Elwood missed the conversion, a third penalty had the home side just 27-21 down.

With little time remaining, the Borders’ defence just crumbled under sustained Connacht pressure. First Connacht skipper Andrew Farley went over for the score bringing Connacht within one point of The Borders. It looked over for them, when Eric Elwood missed the conversion, but Elwood regained his composure and calmly slotted over the injury time penalty to win the match.
