Revamped Lansdowne Road revealed
The IRFU and the FAI unveiled their joint proposal for the future of Landsdowne Road today. The design is for a completely new 50,000-seater stadium. The design would be completely within the boundaries of the IRFU’s existing land at Landsdowne Road.
The new-look stadium was designed by Arup Sport, a division of Arup Consulting Engineers - a company responsible for numerous large scale projects. The new statium will feature a translucent roof that will cover the stands while ensuring the pitch get’s the water it needs. The FAI and IRFU believe that the proposed plans should also allay the fears of the public, since provisions have been made to keep the DART and rail services running.
A decision on the stadium from the government is still required but as has been reported here previously, the government seems quite receptive to the plans. It also remains to be seen where Ireland’s rugby and soccer matches will be played during the period of construction of this stadium!
